Miami, FL - DayStar combines photographic slides and vintage
projection devices from the artist's personal collection, alongside
drawings that evoke the iconographic universe of his childhood.
With Daystar, Miami-based artist Kevin Arrow explores the hidden order
of his personal universe - people, places and things - through the
juxtaposition and sequencing of 'random' 35 mm slides and his drawings.
Arrow's projection works are the result of a decade of collecting and
archiving hundreds of 'found' 35mm slides. His drawings - inspired by
pop culture, cartoons, magazines, advertising, comic books and rock
music - record an intimate personal journey, while offering a glimpse
into the collective unconscious of our era.
By blurring the boundary between the random and sequential, between
'found' images and those created by the artist's hand, DayStar conjures
up unpredictable, unexpected connections. Working within rigid
self-imposed structures, Arrow orchestrates a dance between chaos and
order, where unexpected meanings arise, fluctuate and disappear again.
The use of supposedly 'obsolete' media - vintage projection machines and 35 mm slides - suggests the impermanent nature of all technology,
while their outmoded esthetic calls into question our sense of
nostalgia, and the function of memory itself.
The imagery of DayStar is organized into four principal themes: Beauty
in Movement, Stasis, People in Places and Slides about Slides.
Kevin Arrow's work features in numerous public and private art
collections. He is currently at work on a commission from Miami Beach
Art in Public Places, to commemorate the arrival of The Beatles in
Miami Beach in 1964.
